It is true that individual long term care insurance will not solve the problem of a funding source for most families but it will be helpful for some middle class families who can afford $2000-$3000 or more a year with >$100,000 in assets to protect. However, a far better solution would be employer-based coverage, which is portable, with the employee paying a portion or all of the cost. The premium would be minimal when one starts at a young age. An even better solution would be a new Part added to the Medicare program which is not likely politically, given the federal deficit and the fact that 44 million people do not currently have health insurance.
